ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP

The Leon Brady Scholarship honors the remarkable legacy of a Louisiana-born jazz musician, educator, and community pillar who dedicated his life to the youth and culture of Kansas City, Kansas.

After graduating high school, Leon Brady joined the United States Air Force in 1949. Following his military service, he earned his Bachelor of Science from Tennessee State University in 1957. In 1959, he accepted a position as band director at Dunbar Elementary and Northeast Junior High Schools in Kansas City, KS. He transferred to Sumner High School in 1966, where he continued to shape generations of young musicians.

In 1969, Mr. Brady opened Progressive Music Studio in the historic Quindaro neighborhood of Kansas City, KS, and in 1976 established Brady & Sons Music Company. In 2001, he launched the Kansas City Youth Jazz program, cementing his role as a cornerstone of the local music community.
